CLINT ROBERTS’ NEW EP ‘HOLLER CHOIR’
PRODUCED BY MIKE ASHWORTH OF STEEP CANYON RANGERS
Singer-songwriter and musician Clint Roberts’ new EP, ‘Holler Choir,’ is out today via Carry On Music. Listen/Buy HERE. Relying heavily on vocal performance, stringed instrumentation and the use of Appalachian tonalities, the music was produced by Mike Ashworth of the Grammy Award Winning Steep Canyon Rangers.
“I see this EP as a shift towards my strengths, which is the human voice and mountain music,” says Roberts. His experiences and influences from growing up in Western North Carolina near the Pisgah Forest bleeds into every track on Holler Choir. “The instruments played are ‘old familiar friends’ to me and I know how to arrange them in a way that is authentic.” Roberts is the sole songwriter on the EP.
Keeping with the thread of authenticity, Roberts (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica) carefully selected fellow North Carolina musicians to accompany him on the project which was recorded at Crossroads Studios outside of Asheville; Mike Ashworth (stand-up bass, drums), Julian Pinelli (fiddle), Ryan Stigmon (harmony vocals, dobro, acoustic guitar, pedal steel), Helena Rose Hunt (harmony vocals, banjo), and Colton Nelson (harmony vocals).
Songwriting subject matter flows from the opening “Jeremiah,” a commentary on growing up in the south and witnessing discrimination against individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, to the vivacious “Mountain Air” that reminds us that no one is perfect, onto “Chrysalis” that acts as a collection of journal entries over time.
Holler Choir follows Roberts’ 2021 label debut, Rose Songs. Those familiar with the full-length album will recognize a few of the songs on the EP; “Nothing Left To Say,” “Carolina Moon” and “Chrysalis,” which are re-imagined with strong stringed instrumentation.
Holler Choir is available now via Carry On Music across all digital platforms.
