CLINT ROBERTS’ NEW SINGLE “JEREMIAH,” ON INCLUSIVITY AND HOPE OUT TODAY
FROM UPCOMING EP ‘HOLLER CHOIR’ OUT MAY 13, 2022
PRODUCED BY MIKE ASHWORTH OF STEEP CANYON RANGERS
Singer-songwriter and musician Clint Roberts released his new single “Jeremiah” off his forthcoming EP ‘Holler Choir’ today. Stream/purchase HERE. The track is written from the point of view of an older brother who’s sibling struggles with accepting the truth of his sexual orientation due to the outdated beliefs of his surroundings.
“This song is a commentary on growing up in the south and witnessing discrimination against young gay [LGBTQ+] individuals. I myself do not have a gay brother but have dear friends who identify as so. As a heterosexual male, I can’t and won’t pretend to know what many people go through that are discriminated against. I can only speak to the pain I feel watching it happen in front of me. ‘Jeremiah’ was my way of expressing solidarity through the lens of my Appalachian upbringing,” says Roberts.
Relying heavily on vocal performance and the use of Appalachian tonalities, ‘Holler Choir’ will be released on May 13th via Carry On Music. Produced by Mike Ashworth of the Grammy Award Winning Steep Canyon Rangers, the music features all fellow North Carolina musicians —Roberts (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica), Mike Ashworth (stand-up bass, drums), Julian Pinelli (fiddle), Ryan Stigmon (harmony vocals, dobro, acoustic guitar, pedal steel), Helena Rose Hunt (harmony vocals, banjo), and Colton Nelson (harmony vocals).
“I see this EP as a shift towards my strengths, which is the human voice and mountain music,” says Roberts. His experiences and influences from growing up in Western North Carolina near the Pisgah Forest bleeds into every track on Holler Choir. “The instruments played are ‘old familiar friends’ to me. I know how to arrange them in a way that feels authentic.”
Holler Choir follows Roberts’ 2021 label debut, Rose Songs. Those familiar with the full-length album will recognize three of the five songs on the EP; “Nothing Left To Say,” “Carolina Moon” and “Chrysalis,” which are re-imagined to showcase stringed instruments.
